Mobile social tariffs and cheap SIM-only plans
Last reviewed: 16 October 2026. How we source and verify.
Some mobile networks offer a social tariff to people on certain benefits. VOXI, which is part of Vodafone, offers one called VOXI For Now. Ofcom’s list shows the others.
If you do not qualify for a social tariff, a SIM-only plan with no contract can still cost much less than a phone bundled with a plan, and you can leave when you like.
Social tariffs
Eligibility and price differ by provider and change over time, so read the provider’s own page. Some providers check your benefit with your permission rather than asking for paperwork.
Free mobile data
Some charities and councils give out free mobile data or SIM cards to people who cannot afford it. The Good Things Foundation runs one such scheme: ask a local library, advice charity or council whether there is one near you.
SIM-only, not a new phone
We do not link to deals that put a handset on credit. If you need a new phone, check the total you would repay before you sign anything, and think hard about whether you can keep up the payments.
Where to look first
Official and free options first, then providers that publish a social tariff, each group alphabetically.
- Good Things Foundation — Charity-run schemes that give free mobile data. Ask locally what is available.
- Ofcom’s list of social tariffs — The complete, current list for mobile and broadband.
- VOXI For Now — A social tariff from VOXI for people on certain benefits. Check its page for the current price and who qualifies.
Check what benefits you may be able to claim
It usually takes about 5 minutes. You do not need to create an account. This is guidance, not a government decision.
