Help with water bills
Last reviewed: 16 October 2026. How we source and verify.
Water companies must offer help to customers who struggle to pay. What is available depends on your company, so start by asking it. There is no commercial offer on this page, because you cannot choose your water company.
Social tariffs
Most water companies run a social tariff that lowers the bill for customers on a low income or who get certain benefits. The name, the discount and who qualifies differ between companies, so ask yours or look at its website.
WaterSure
WaterSure caps the bill for some people on certain benefits who have a water meter and high essential use of water, for example because of a medical condition or a large family. Ask your water company whether you qualify.
If you are behind
Contact your company before the arrears build up. CCW, the independent consumer body for water, gives free advice and can help if you are not getting a fair answer.
Check what benefits you may be able to claim
It usually takes about 5 minutes. You do not need to create an account. This is guidance, not a government decision.
