Housing Benefit

Last verified: 4 October 2026. We check the official source every night. How we verify.

Help towards rent if you are on a low income. Most working-age people now claim housing costs through Universal Credit instead. Housing Benefit still applies in some situations, including many people of State Pension age.

How much you could get

The amount depends on your circumstances. We do not publish a figure unless it is tied to a tax year and an official source.

Check the current amount on the official page.

Who can claim

You may still get Housing Benefit if you have reached State Pension age, live in supported or temporary housing, or are in another remaining eligible group. Most other working-age renters should look at Universal Credit.

Eligibility conditions

These are the structured conditions Benefit Badger uses in the eligibility check. They are a guide, not a decision.

  • You live in the UK.
  • You pay rent.
  • You may still be in a group that can claim Housing Benefit, such as State Pension age.

Check if Housing Benefit may apply to you

It usually takes about 5 minutes. You do not need to create an account. This is guidance, not a government decision.

When it may not apply

If you are working age and renting privately or from a council or housing association, you will usually need Universal Credit rather than a new Housing Benefit claim.

Where you live

Housing Benefit is available UK-wide, but the claim route can still differ across nations.

How to claim

  1. Check whether you should claim Universal Credit instead. Most working-age renters make a new claim for housing costs through Universal Credit, not Housing Benefit. Housing Benefit still applies in remaining groups, including many people of State Pension age. Official page
  2. Apply to your local council if Housing Benefit still applies. Councils administer Housing Benefit. GOV.UK points you to the right local form. There is no central Benefit Badger application. Official page
  3. Have rent, occupancy and income evidence. Tenancy agreements, rent accounts and proof of income or Pension Credit are typical. Your council’s form lists exactly what they need.
  4. Ask the council about Discretionary Housing Payment if there is a shortfall. That is a separate, limited payment. It is not automatic and each council has its own budget.
