UK-wideClosed to new claims
Income Support
Last verified: 4 October 2026. We check the official source every night. How we verify.
Income Support is closed to most new claims. It was an income-related DWP benefit for some people who could not be required to look for work. Universal Credit replaced it for most working-age people.
How much you could get
There is no current new-claim rate. Any remaining awards follow DWP’s legacy rules until they move to Universal Credit.
Check the current amount on the official page.
Who can claim
You cannot usually make a new claim. A small number of people may still be paid on a legacy award. If you need income-related help now, check Universal Credit on GOV.UK.
When it may not apply
New working-age claims go to Universal Credit. Do not use a claims company that offers to “reopen Income Support”.
Where you live
Income Support was a UK-wide payment. New claims are closed.

How to claim
- New claims for Income Support are not available. Income Support was an income-related benefit. For most people of working age, Universal Credit replaced it. GOV.UK explains who might still be on a legacy award. Official page
- If you still receive it, read any “move to Universal Credit” letter carefully. Managed migration has deadlines. Missing them can stop the old payment. Only DWP’s letter and GOV.UK describe your date.
- Check housing and council tax separately. Legacy benefits often sat alongside Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction. Universal Credit treats housing differently and does not include council tax.
- Use GOV.UK, not a claims company, to see what replaces it. Start a Universal Credit check from the official page if you need income-related help now.
