Working Tax Credit (WTC)

Last verified: 4 October 2026. We check the official source every night. How we verify.

Working Tax Credit has ended for new claims. It was an HMRC payment for people on a low income who were working. Universal Credit replaced it for most working-age people.

Warning: Working Tax Credit has been replaced by Universal Credit. You cannot make a new claim for Working Tax Credit.

How much you could get

There is no current rate for a new claim. Historical elements are not a guide to what you would get on Universal Credit.

Check the current amount on the official page.

Who can claim

You cannot make a new claim. If HMRC still has you on a remaining tax credit award, follow the letters about moving to Universal Credit. Those letters, not this page, give your date.

When it may not apply

New claims are closed. Paid “tax credit renewal” websites are not official. If you need help with living costs now, check Universal Credit and any other benefits that still exist.

Where you live

What replaced Working Tax Credit?

Universal Credit replaced Working Tax Credit for new claims. There is no new Working Tax Credit award. If HMRC is still paying you tax credits, follow the move-to-Universal-Credit letters. Claiming UC at the wrong time can stop tax credits — use GOV.UK, not a paid “renewal” site.

How to claim

  1. Working Tax Credit is closed to new claims. Working Tax Credit was replaced by Universal Credit for most people. You cannot make a new claim for it. Read GOV.UK on tax credits ending and what to do instead. Official page
  2. If you still have a tax credit award, follow HMRC’s current instructions. Remaining awards are being moved. Only the letters and GOV.UK pages from HMRC describe your deadline and what happens to childcare or disability elements.
  3. Check Universal Credit before tax credits stop. There can be rules about when to claim UC so you are not left without payment. GOV.UK’s “move to Universal Credit” guidance is the one to follow.
  4. Do not use a paid “tax credit renewal” website. HMRC does not charge for this. Benefit Badger cannot renew or restore a tax credit claim.
