What benefits can I claim if I am self-employed?

Self-employed people can get Universal Credit. DWP uses your reported earnings and, after a start-up period, may apply a minimum income floor to some claimants. That is a live GOV.UK rule — do not rely on a forum post from a previous tax year.

You cannot get Statutory Maternity Pay or Statutory Sick Pay from an employer you do not have. Maternity Allowance and New Style ESA (if you have paid enough National Insurance) are the usual alternatives. Tax-Free Childcare is an HMRC scheme that many self-employed parents can use if they meet the hours and income tests.

Benefits this usually points to

  • Universal Credit

A monthly payment to help with living costs if you are on a low income, out of work, or cannot work. It can include amounts for housing, children, disability, and caring.

  • Maternity Allowance

A payment for 39 weeks if you are employed or self-employed but cannot get Statutory Maternity Pay from an employer.

  • Tax-Free Childcare

An HMRC scheme where you pay into an online account for registered childcare and the government adds a contribution, up to a yearly cap. It is not a DWP benefit and usually cannot be combined with Universal Credit childcare costs for the same costs.

  • New Style Employment and Support Allowance

A contribution-based benefit if you have a disability or health condition that affects how much you can work, and you have paid enough National Insurance.

  • Council Tax Reduction

Help from your local council if you are on a low income and need to pay council tax. Each council runs its own scheme, so the rules and amounts vary.

Check what may apply in your circumstances

It usually takes about 5 minutes. You do not need to create an account. This is guidance, not a government decision.

Keep records

Universal Credit for self-employed people needs regular reporting of income and expenses. The official UC guidance lists what counts. Benefit Badger cannot file those reports for you.
