Can I get New Style ESA and Universal Credit together?

Yes, if you meet the National Insurance conditions for New Style ESA and you also need means-tested help, you can often get both. ESA is taken into account as income for Universal Credit. New Style ESA is not the same as income-related ESA, which is closed to most new claims.

How to claim

  1. Follow the GOV.UK New Style ESA claim route. This is contribution-based. It can be claimed on its own or alongside Universal Credit if your income is low. Official page
  2. Expect a Work Capability Assessment. Most claims involve an assessment of whether your condition limits work. The official page explains what happens after you apply.
  3. Keep medical evidence that explains functional limits. Fit notes and reports help, but the assessment looks at what you can do, not only the diagnosis name.
  4. This is not income-related ESA. Income-related ESA closed to most new claims. If you need help with rent or living costs, check Universal Credit as well.
