Winter Fuel Payment

Last verified: 3 October 2026. We check the official source every night. How we verify.

A yearly tax-free payment to help older people with heating costs. Eligibility has changed in recent years, so always check the current GOV.UK rules before assuming you will get it.

How much you could get

The amount depends on your circumstances. We do not publish a figure unless it is tied to a tax year and an official source.

Check the current amount on the official page.

Who can claim

You usually need to have reached State Pension age and meet the current income or Pension Credit rules for the winter in question. The rules have been updated, so check GOV.UK.

How to claim

  1. Read this year’s eligibility on GOV.UK before you assume payment. Winter Fuel Payment rules have changed. Some people are paid automatically; others must apply. The current winter’s rules are the only ones that count. Official page
  2. If GOV.UK says you need to apply, use that form only. Do not use unofficial “winter fuel” claim sites. The official how-to-claim route is linked from GOV.UK. Official page
  3. Pension Credit can still be the key that unlocks it. In some recent winters, getting Pension Credit was the difference between payment and no payment. Check both pages.
  4. Scotland may use a different winter heating payment. If you live in Scotland, check mygov.scot as well as GOV.UK so you follow the scheme that actually applies.
