Help with energy bills

Last reviewed: 16 October 2026. How we source and verify.

Before you look at switching supplier, check the help you may already be entitled to. Some of it is paid automatically and some you have to ask for.

Payments and discounts

The Warm Home Discount takes a one-off amount off your winter electricity bill if you qualify. GOV.UK describes it as £150 (read 16 October 2026); check the page for the winter you are in, because the scheme opens and closes each year.

Winter Fuel Payment, Cold Weather Payment (England and Wales) and Winter Heating Payment (Scotland) are separate payments with their own rules, and some depend on your age or on getting a benefit such as Pension Credit. Our guides to each explain who qualifies and how to claim.

If you are struggling to pay

Contact your supplier before you fall behind and ask what support it offers. Many suppliers have a hardship fund, and Citizens Advice explains what you can ask for if you have a prepayment meter or have built up a debt.

Who cannot easily switch

If you owe your supplier money, switching may be blocked or the debt may follow you to the new supplier, so ask your current supplier first. If you rent, you may need your landlord’s agreement to change supplier, depending on your tenancy. Switching will not save you much if you are already on a cheap or capped tariff.

Insulation and heating grants

If you get certain means-tested benefits you may qualify for free or discounted insulation or heating upgrades. Our sister site, Home Energy Planner, which is run by the same company, explains the grants and what they cover.

Where to look first

Official and free options first, then the rest, alphabetically.

  • Cold Weather Payment — Paid in very cold spells to some people on certain benefits in England and Wales.
  • Home Energy Planner — Grants for insulation and heating, from our sister site run by the same company.
  • Pension Credit — Income top-up for people over State Pension age, and a route to other help with bills.
  • Warm Home Discount — A one-off discount on your winter electricity bill if you qualify.
  • Winter Fuel Payment — A winter payment for some people over State Pension age.

Comparing prices

A comparison can help if you are free to switch and pay by direct debit or standing order. It will not help with the support above, which comes from the government or your supplier.

Check what benefits you may be able to claim

It usually takes about 5 minutes. You do not need to create an account. This is guidance, not a government decision.
