Blue Badge

Last verified: 2 October 2026. We check the official source every night. How we verify.

A parking badge that helps people with disabilities or health conditions that affect walking park closer to where they need to go. Councils issue it. It is not a DWP cash benefit.

How much you could get

There is usually a small fee for issue or renewal, set by the council within national rules. It is not a weekly payment.

Check the current amount on the official page.

Who can claim

Some people qualify automatically, including many who get the enhanced mobility rate of PIP or Adult Disability Payment, the higher rate of DLA mobility, or who are registered severely sight impaired. Others can qualify after a council assessment of walking difficulty or a hidden disability that meets the official tests.

Eligibility conditions

These are the structured conditions Benefit Badger uses in the eligibility check. They are a guide, not a decision.

  • You live in the UK.
  • You have a disability or mobility difficulty, or care for a child who does.

Check if Blue Badge may apply to you

It usually takes about 5 minutes. You do not need to create an account. This is guidance, not a government decision.

When it may not apply

Having a disability or a car does not by itself guarantee a badge. The badge is for the person, not the vehicle. Misuse can lead to a fine and withdrawal.

Where you live

Blue Badge is available UK-wide, but the claim route can still differ across nations.

How to claim

  1. Apply to your local council from the GOV.UK Blue Badge service. Automatic qualification and assessed qualification are both set out on GOV.UK. Higher-rate mobility PIP and some other payments can qualify automatically; others need an assessment. Official page
  2. Do not buy a badge from a private website. Only councils issue Blue Badges. Paid “fast track” sites are not official.
  3. Have proof of identity, address and any qualifying benefit. The council application lists documents. A photograph is usually required.
  4. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own application services. The GOV.UK page points to the right national service. Rules are similar but not identical.
